B2MeM Prompt, Card and Number: Moodboard, Comment on a Fanwork, B9
Format: Comment

There are some beautiful moodboards out there. A couple of my favorites include:

--Sorrowsaesthetics (Shiny~)’s Ambarussa Tumblr post

--Feanorions (Utúlie’n aurë)’s whole set of posts for each Feanorian. I really liked Celegorm’s.

They both are very “soothing” and capture the spirit of the characters so well.

B2MeM Prompt, Card and Number: Created as a Gift, Comment on a Fanwork, N39
Format: Comment

This is a difficult prompt. It is frankly hard to search for fiction that is a gift post. In looking at my history on Ao3 I did find some. Most were quite older entries. There was one that stood out. An all-time favorite of mine that I've frequently re-read:

Mature

"Rescuing Maglor" by Amyfortuna for IdleLeaves. It was originally posted for the "2015 Ardor in August" Challenge.

Nice, different take on Maedhros' and Maglor's stealing of the Silmarils at the end. Not going to spoil it, but loved the "surprise" character and the role he played. I also particularly liked how Amyfortuna described the breaking apart of Beleriand. Worth a read!

Been loving the maps reveal on Twitter. Looks like we have our final map and it’s looking like Second Age. So excited! I honestly wasn’t too into a “young Aragon” in the woods.

B2MeM Prompt, Card and Number: A fic you reread, Comment on a Fanwork, G48
Format: Comment

This is a toughie. I reread fics all the time. I seriously don't know what I would do if my Ao3 history and bookmarks disappeared.

For today's G48 entry, I"m going with Narya's "Time Present, Time Future".

Please check it out. A great story that highlights the Finweions' youth and camaraderie, as well as some troubling foretelling.

Well, discovered The Dragon Prince series on Netflix this weekend. I really enjoyed it. I thought they did a nice storyline -- brought depth to the characters, continued the world-building and backdrop. Intelligent interaction among the characters -- some very poignant and frankly good messaging throughout.

Loved the call-outs to other stories (ex., Sailor Moon reference and the famous "One does not simply walk into ..." line). The art that is coming out, particularly around the new evil (most probably) protagonist is really nice. Be sure and search Aaravos and Runaan on DA, etc. to see some amazing artwork.

Not sure  how many of you have been following this on Twitter, but there's been a bracket contest where you vote for your favorite Tolkien characters through diminishing rounds. This game is killing me. It's addictive. The matchups are randomly drawn.

I pretty much have bombed every round. Maglor, Celegorm, Curufin killed off early. Melkor and Sauron bit it in second round. Even Feanor lost out as its progressed! The last round forced you to pick between Maedhros and Finrod! What evil is this?

Towards the last stages I decided to go with Huan for the win. We're now down to the final four to get to final two. What is the pairing??? Huan vs. Finrod. Just started screaming! It's been a ton of fun--great way through the comments to see who cheering for whom. (Love how the Huan contingent suggested retweeting to the AKC association to get swing votes for Huan.) You really should check out @thegreendoorpod on Twitter and catch up on the game!

I've recently seen posts (Tolkien/Silm related) by an "artist" on DeviantArt where the piece seems more than EERILY similar to other art posted here. I've been following the Tolkien fandom for quite a while. If someone has posted something, I more than likely have seen it. It bothers me considerably when I see "new" art posted that obviously was copied/taken from other artists. There is no excuse for this. If you are practicing your skills by trying to simulate other art, that may be okay, but you would NEVER post it. Particularly with no reference to the original source/artist (and only with their explicit approval).

This is basic common sense and courtesy. Don't think you are fooling anyone. I have a good memory -- I can normally find the source material quite easily, and anyone in this fandom can as well. The artists in the Tolkien fandom have very distinctive styles. After a while you just "know" who is posting what.

I really shouldn't have to be posting this entry. It needs to stop.

I found out this past week that Netflix/BBC released a limited animation series of Watership Down after Christmas (I must be living in a burrow myself because I had never heard of this release and had wondered why I was starting to see more rabbit pics on DA).

Watership Down — one of my favorite books and movie (“Bright Eyeees” anyone?). I can’t tell you how many times I read that book when it came out. And I would sob at the end every time. Hadn’t thought of it or the characters in years.

I was actually hesitant to watch the series — read very mixed reviews, mainly folks complaining about the animation and the departure from the book and characters. Well, I took the plunge and binge-watched it last night. I actually liked it. Thoroughly enjoyed the opening. I thought the animation was nice — I really liked the depiction of Efrafa — a stark contrast to the traditional view of a rabbit warren under a tree. And this General Woundwort was my favorite. You could feel the cunning and malice in his words. It struck me while watching that both Efrafa and Woundwort in some ways mirrored my impressions of Mordor and Sauron.

So, this weekend I’m reminiscing and thinking about Hazel, Bigwig, Captain Holly, Fiver, Blackavar and the rest. Good memories.

"All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed." —Lord Frith

As I'm off Tumblr today in protest and things are a little slow on the work front (folks are starting to disappear for the holidays), I thought I'd take advantage of it by reading The Science of Middle Earth by Henry Gee. I recently bought the book based on an old post from markedasinfernal (Tumblr) / theeventualwinner (Ao3).

I've always been a science nerd and quite enjoyed the read. From learning the difference between Lit. vs. Lang. studies, discovering that there is an extinct marine worm named Ancalagon, and analyzing the potential for dragon fire (think diethyl ether), there was plenty in the book to get me amused and I genuinely learned quite a bit.

As I was reading, it reminded me of two terrific fanfics where the authors did a great job of incorporating science into their stories. First is a callout to the wonderful Feanope (on Tumblr/Pillowfort) / Sleepless_Malice (Ao3) and their story "Deed of Gift". It's a great read and really interesting story on a real chemistry experiment called "golden rain."

Second callout is to markedasinfernal / theeventfulwinner and their story "Sins Of Our Fathers", specifically chapter 4, Acedia (please note, this fic is not for the faint of heart -- heed rating/warnings!!). Here I was painfully reminded of my failed attempts while studying Chemistry in college.

Anyway, if you are interested in this type of thing you might want to consider reading Henry Gee's book.

(Sorry for not embedding links to the authors/fics mentioned. I can't figure out how to do it on DW.)

Sauron by Kaprriss on DA

I've decided (with the artist's permission) to post some of my favorite commissions done for me over the past few years. This beautiful picture of Sauron by the lovely Kaprriss on DeviantArt was my first commission (link). I was so thrilled with it. I love the details, colors, design.

As I mentioned before I found Johanneszab's ThumblThree downloader (https://github.com/johanneszab/TumblThree). I was able to save my main blog. After further review, and reading the detailed notes from the site, I was able to save anything I've ever liked! Had over 9K "likes".

In Thumblthree, add this URL to crawl: https://www.tumblr.com/liked/by/yourblogname/.

You do have to have your likes viewable within Tumblr (one of the settings you pick). Worked perfectly. Also, when you are running the app, and using Tumblr it will go through an update likes/reblogs along the way.

Had zero success exporting my Tumblr blog. Found an opensource app TumblThree (https://github.com/johanneszab/TumblThree/releases) and it worked! Have all my files (texts, conversations, pictures – anything I’ve posted or reblogged). See screenshot of my folder. Only took like 2 minutes to crawl/product my files.

Didn’t grab the likes. Still investigating that.

Well, now that it's "officially" the weekend as far as I'm concerned, I am starting to tackle the concept of saving down my Tumblr blog and all the wonderful posts/art that I don't want to lose. Found the export button for the blog. We're going on about an hour now in archiving (I was told it took a long time--I was only on Tumblr a few years and didn't post that much; can't imagine what the time will be for some folks). Will be interested to see the output file.

I received my Pillowfort key today. Will be setting that up this weekend.
